About this class: This course introduces participants to the life and work of Mary Oliver, one of America’s most beloved poets. We will explore how her poems, celebrated for their clarity, wonder, and insight into the natural world, invite us to reflect, grow, and embrace life’s transitions. Together, we’ll discover how Oliver’s language startles, enlivens, and inspires us toward personal transformation.

Instructor bio: Christine Madline Ellsworth is a Minnesota native, hailing from Minneapolis, currently residing in southeastern North Dakota. She holds a BA in English literature from Minnesota State University, Moorhead and an MA in English literature from Marquette University. As a member of the National Association for Poetry Therapy, Christine has facilitated poetry therapy sessions for high school students working through grief, adults grappling with change, women recovering from domestic violence, and seniors seeking to embrace aging with grace and joy. She is also a member of the board for the newly formed (2025) North Dakota State Poetry Society. Christine is the author of one book of poetry, titled Girl Again, published in 2020 by Potter’s Wheel Press. Her work has also been published in Red Weather, Northern Eclecta, Scurfpea, the Talking Stick, the Otter Tail Review, Agates, Northern Narratives, and the North Dakota Quarterly.
