What is a Study Club?
A Study Club is a small group of people who come together to explore big ideas through meaningful conversation. Each club chooses when and how to meet, whether in a library, living room, or online, and The Study provides curated content, discussion guides, and ongoing support. Together, these gatherings create space for curiosity, connection, and community-driven learning.

How do I Start a Study Club?
One
Sign Up to Become a Host.
Complete the form to register your Study Club with The Study. Once you’re signed up, you’ll receive a host packet with everything you need—discussion guides, event access, and promotional materials.
Two
Pick a Program.
Choose from The Study’s curated library of recorded lectures, book talks, and classes. Each comes with a ready-to-use discussion guide to help spark conversation.
Three
Invite People to Attend.
Gather a few friends, family members, or community members who love meaningful discussion. Your group can meet at a library, in your home, or virtually—whatever works best for you.

Start Hosting.
Watch or listen together, then use the guide to lead a thoughtful conversation. The Study provides reflection questions, background resources, and host tips to make it easy.
Five
Stay Connected.
After your session, share feedback or photos with The Study and explore upcoming topics. Hosts are also invited to optional quarterly calls for updates, idea sharing, and community connection.

What is a Study Club?
A Study Club is a small group of people who come together to explore big ideas through meaningful conversation. Clubs choose when and how to meet, and we provide curated content and support to guide the discussions.
Who can start a Study Club?
Anyone with curiosity and a willingness to bring people together. You do not need to be an expert or educator, just someone who values thoughtful dialogue.
How do I start a Study Club?
Fill out our short interest form, and we will follow up with orientation materials and support to get you started.
Is there a cost to participate?
No. Study Clubs are free to host and free to join. All materials and support are provided at no cost.
What kind of content will we discuss?
Clubs can choose from a library of recorded humanities events, lectures, and conversations on topics such as history, literature, ethics, culture, and civic life. You can also bring your own content if you prefer.
How often do clubs meet?
It is completely up to you. Some clubs meet monthly, others follow a seasonal or short-term schedule. You set the pace that works best for your group.
How big should a club be?
We recommend keeping it small, around 6 to 12 people, to ensure everyone has a chance to participate. But it is flexible based on your community.
Do I have to submit anything after meetings?
Yes. We ask hosts to fill out a short meeting note form each time your club meets. This helps us understand what is working and how we can better support you.
What support is available for hosts?
We provide onboarding guidance, discussion questions, and tech tutorials. Can I co-host with someone else?
Yes. Co-hosting can make it easier to plan and lead discussions, especially for larger groups.
What if I am not sure I am ready to host?
That is completely fine. Reach out to us and we will walk you through the process. Hosting is often easier than it seems, and we are here to help at every step.
Can I see a Study Club in action before starting one?
Yes. We host a monthly virtual Study Club that is open to anyone. It is a great way to experience the format, get ideas, and connect with others. You are always welcome to attend.
Is this a book club?
Not exactly. While some clubs choose to read books together, Study Clubs focus on broader humanities topics such as history, ethics, culture, and civic life. Groups can watch live or recorded events from The Study platform and use our discussion resources to spark meaningful conversations. We are also developing new tools and content to help clubs explore humanities topics in additional ways.
Do participants have to donate?
No. Study Clubs are open to everyone. The support we provide through The Study platform, including events, discussion guides, and host assistance, is made possible by generous donors. If you find value in your club's experience, we encourage you to consider a gift to help keep this work going.
Can I host a club in a library, school, or other public space?
Yes. Clubs can meet anywhere, including living rooms, libraries, cafes, classrooms, or online. Just make sure the space works for the size and style of your group.
Can my club stay private or does it have to be open to the public?
It is your choice. Some clubs are made up of friends, neighbors, or coworkers, while others welcome anyone in the community. You decide what feels right for your group.
What if I need to take a break or stop hosting?
That is completely fine. There is no long-term commitment. We just ask that you let us know so we can keep our records up to date.
Do you offer training or orientation for hosts?
Yes. After signing up, you will receive our onboarding guide and be invited to a live orientation session where you can ask questions and get tips for leading a successful club.
What if someone in my group disagrees or things get tense?
We encourage respectful conversation, even when people see things differently. Our discussion guides include tips for handling tough topics and fostering inclusive dialogue.
