Metaphor and the Body: Explorations of Head-Heart Dualism

Why are head and heart metaphors so culturally prominent? What are the advantages of head-centric versus heart-centric ways of interacting with the environment? Can we use these metaphors in strategic ways?

In this Knowledge on Tap conversation, Dr. Michael D. Robinson will explore these questions and consider how metaphors of the head and heart shape the ways people think about emotion, reasoning, and the world around them.

Dr. Robinson is a University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Psychology at North Dakota State University. He joined NDSU in 2001 and is recognized internationally for his work in personality, emotion, and social cognition.

Robinson has published more than 300 scholarly works, including books and journal articles, and has served as editor for leading social and personality psychology journals.

The conversation will be moderated by Dr. Shari R. Veil, Provost and Chief Academic Officer at North Dakota State University. Dr. Veil brings more than two decades of experience in academic leadership, research, and student success to her role at NDSU. An internationally recognized scholar in risk and crisis communication, she has held academic leadership roles at the University of Nebraska, the University of Kentucky, and the University of Oklahoma, and earned her Ph.D. in Communication from North Dakota State University following completion of her MBA and undergraduate degrees at the University of Mary.
