ABOUT

This is a 6-meeting virtual class using the Zoom platform.

Tuesdays, Feb 3, 17, March 3, 17, 31, April 14 - 7-8:15 pm Central time.

About this class: This 6-week online course for adults continues our exploration of civic education, building on the foundations introduced in the fall. Using the We the People: The Citizen & the Constitution (Level 3) textbook, widely recognized across the country for deepening understanding of American government, we’ll move beyond the philosophical roots of the Constitution to examine its interpretation and application in modern society.

In this semester, we will cover Chapters 4–6, focusing on the branches of government, federalism, the Bill of Rights, and the ongoing challenges of our constitutional democracy. Even if you didn’t take the first semester, you are welcome to join. This class stands on its own and is open to all.

Textbook: We the People: The Citizen & the Constitution, Level 3 (4th Edition) We encourage you to purchase a copy—available from the Center for Civic Education or your preferred bookseller.

Skills Acquired: Civic Literacy, Constitutional Knowledge, Critical Thinking, Public Discourse Participation, Historical Contextualization, Analytical Reading

Please note: This class will be held live on Zoom during the dates and time listed above. If you can’t attend a session or if the time doesn’t work for you, a password-protected course page will host video recordings for registered participants to watch at their convenience.

Instructor bio: Chris Cavanaugh is a high school Social Studies teacher with over 30 years of classroom experience. A James Madison Foundation Senior Fellow, he has been a passionate advocate for civic education for nearly as long as he has been teaching.
